How Ghanvati is Made?

Ghanvati (Ghan Vati) is an Ayurvedic tablet preparation made using concentrated herbal extracts. The term "Ghan" means solid extract, and "Vati" means tablet.

Step-by-Step Process of Making Ghanvati:

  1. Herb Selection & Cleaning:

    • The required herbs are selected based on their medicinal properties.

    • They are cleaned thoroughly to remove impurities.

  2. Decoction (Kwath) Preparation:

    • The dried herbs are boiled in water to extract their active compounds.

    • The process continues until a concentrated liquid extract is obtained.

  3. Filtration & Concentration:

    • The decoction is filtered to remove plant residues.

    • The liquid is further heated to evaporate excess moisture, forming a thick paste or solid extract (Ghan).

  4. Tablet Formation:

    • The thick herbal extract is dried into a powder form.

    • A binding agent like Gum Acacia (Babool Gond) or natural starch may be added for proper tablet formation.

    • The extract is compressed into tablets using a tablet press machine.


Why is Ghanvati Black in Color?

  • The black or dark brown outer layer of Ghanvati is not a coating.

  • It naturally forms due to the high concentration of herbal extract.

  • The color comes from tannins, alkaloids, and other phytochemicals present in the herbs.

  • Some manufacturers may add natural excipients (like starch or gum) to improve tablet integrity, but no artificial coating is applied.
